If you’re expecting a baby in East Texas, one of the most exciting things to plan (besides the nursery!) is your newborn photography session. These first days pass in a blur of tiny yawns, soft skin, and sleepy stretches — and capturing them beautifully requires just the right timing.

Book During Your Second Trimester

The best time to secure your newborn photographer is between 20–30 weeks of pregnancy.

Booking early ensures:

You’ll get a spot on the schedule even if your baby arrives early or late.
You have time to plan your session preferences including colors, props, family poses.
I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month to guarantee personalized attention and flexibility for each family, so booking early ensures you get in during those first 21 days.

When to Photograph Your Newborn

For studio newborn photography, the ideal time to photograph your baby is between 5–21 days after birth.

During this window:

Babies are sleepier and curl naturally into those sweet poses.
Their skin is typically at its best for natural, soft lighting.
Feedings and naps fall into a gentle rhythm, helping the session run smoothly.

If your baby needs extra time (NICU stay, recovery, or feeding adjustments), don’t worry I adjust every session to baby’s comfort.

Our Gilmer studio is designed for comfort and convenience, fully stocked with wraps, headbands, and props. Families drive from Longview, Tyler, and other East Texas towns because everything is provided, and the space is calm and welcoming.

A studio session means you don’t need to worry about lighting, clutter, or setup at home. You can simply arrive, relax, and enjoy watching your baby’s portraits unfold. It also allows for me to have more options and setups than I could bring to an in-home session.

Can You Still Book After Baby Arrives?

Yes — it’s possible! While early booking guarantees a reserved date range, I occasionally have last-minute openings. If your baby has already arrived, contact me as soon as possible. I’ll do my best to fit you in within those first few weeks or create a modified session for slightly older newborns (up to six weeks old).

Booking is simple:

Contact New Joy Photography with your due date.
Sign your contract and pay the session retainer to hold your spot.
I'll schedule your session. If your baby arrives early or later than expected, we will update the date as needed.

I take care of everything else from wraps and props to soothing and posing your baby safely.
