What to Expect at Your Newborn Photography Session

Booking a newborn photographer is one of those decisions that feels simple until you start asking questions — and then you realize how much goes into it. If you’re expecting and you’re in or around Longview, Texas, here’s an honest look at what a newborn session actually involves, so you know exactly what you’re walking into.

When to Book

Newborn sessions are best done in the first five to fourteen days of life. During this window, babies sleep deeply, curl naturally into those tucked poses you see in fine art portraits, and are flexible enough to transition between setups without stress. The catch: studios fill up fast. Most photographers — including me — recommend booking during your second trimester so your spot is reserved before your due date arrives.

What Happens the Day Of

Sessions at New Joy Photography are scheduled in a generous time window — typically three to four hours — because we never rush. Here's what that time includes:

A warm studio. Babies regulate body temperature poorly, so the room is kept warm enough that they stay sleepy and comfortable throughout. First-time parents are often surprised by how toasty it is.

Feeding breaks whenever baby needs them. Sessions are completely baby-led. If your little one is hungry, fussy, or just needs to be held for a while, we pause. There's no pressure and no clock.

Custom styling. You'll have a consultation before your session to choose wraps, props, colors, and any custom concepts that feel like you. Nothing is grabbed off a generic shelf — each setup is considered.

Safe posing, always. Every pose used at New Joy Photography follows strict newborn safety protocols. Composite techniques are used for unsupported poses, with a spotter present throughout.

What to Bring

Not much. A few outfits if you'd like family or sibling shots, a pacifier if your baby uses one, and whatever you need to feed your baby. Everything else — wraps, props, backdrops — is provided.

After Your Session

Galleries are typically delivered within two to three weeks. You'll receive a private online gallery to view, download, and order from.
